From the President:
Dear Square and Round Dance Friends,

Hope your summer was a good one and you are ready for the cooler weather and a new square and round dance season. Check out the great lineup of callers and cuers for our Federation dances this year. You can find a schedule on the front inside cover of this newsletter, on our dance cards, and on our new website, www.squaredancelubbocktx.com.

Pat and Joy Kotal along with Lynn Myers helped to start this dance season off right by calling and cueing our first Federation Dance on September 5, 2009. Mike Bramlett, our scheduled caller, was unable to be here because of job obligations, so arranged for Pat and Joy to substitute for him. Pat, one of the Texas Po Boys, did a super job calling and Joy sang harmony with him on most of his singing calls to make them even better. We thank this cordial couple for coming on such short notice and for doing an outstanding job. We also had many round dancers take advantage of the excellent cueing of Lynn Myers. A big thank you also goes to Lynn and the round dancers for helping make our first dance a great one.

We had a total of seven and one half paid squares attending the dance. Hub City Wheelers received one third of the honeypot for hosting the dance. Diamond Plus Dancers received both halves of the second one third (one half for having the most members present and one half for having the highest percentage of members present). The remaining one third went to Larry Johnson who held the winnng ticket. We hope you will make plans now to attend our next Federation Dance October 3, 2009 with Tom Roper calling and Kathy Stevens cueing. Also, encourage your fellow club members to join you and maybe even help win part of the honeypot for your club.

Because or some problems with our former website and the fact that two of our former webmasters have moved away, we have set up a new web site with a new name, www.squaredancelubbocktx.com.  Our new web has an entirely different format and we hope that you will like it. Please visit us and take a look around. We do need information and input from you. If you have any news, suggestions or comments, please call us at 997-7040 or email us at adaj62@windstream.net.

Don't forget our Federation Dances first Saturday of each month. See you there.

Garland and Ada Cooper

Maurice Stephenson, Caller

President-Jim Dickens-806-795-6877
Vice President-Thelma Fowler
Secretary/Treasurer-Jess/Vicki Ritcherson
Reporter-Cinnamon Stone
Delegates-Thelma Fowler and Jim Dickens

Hub City Wheelers are still dancing on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month at 8:00 pm. We invite you to come on out and dance with us. Maurice lets us dance most of the evening, but challenges our skills unexpectedly at times.

Don Dillard has been conducting round dance lessons before our dances for the past several dances and has stayed to cue rounds for us during our dance. We don't know how long Don will continue to do this, but have certainly enjoyed his cueing these past few weeks. Thank you, Don.

Hub City is hoping-and planning to get some more of that money that will be available at the Federation Dances this year. We will be working hard to have the most members present and/or the highest percentage of members present. We challenge you to do the same. We were ineligible for the September 5th dance as we were hosting, and Diamond Plus won both sides of the honey pot split---but watch out for us in the future.

Hope to see you in a square soon.

HCW

Don't forget the "Hobo Hoe Down" (52nd anniversary dance) Saturday, October 17, 2009. Scott Bennett will be calling and Lynn Myers will be cueing the rounds. Hobo soup and cornbread will be served at 6:30 pm. Rounds will start at 7:15 with the squares to follow at 8:00. We will be selling tickets for a chance to win a $100 can of cash. What an exciting time of the year with the coming of October and the array of fall colors spreading throughout a beautiful Indian summer.  November is right close behind and Thanksgiving-a time to be thankful for America---and its forefathers. With summer almost behind us we still have a few hot days to go. Like the ole cowboy used to say, "It has been hotter than a pistol". But with the wind and a little rain here and there we have managed to survive the triple digits. One of the hot spots in the nation in June was the Texas State Festival in Waco, not because of the heat and humidity (which there was plenty of) but because of the fantastic festival held there. The attendance was the best it had been in seven years-and everyone had a great time.

Now is the time to shake off the shackles of summer and get ready to kick up our heels and do some serious square and round dancing. The Solo Squares have been on the go all summer but held their annual Casual Dance on August 27, 2009. This year we changed our format from our Annual Picnic/Barn Dance to a "Casual Tacky Dance". You should have seen some of the "tacky" clothes. Fifty-four dancers enjoyed the evening of fun and ice cream. Dennis Horn even dressed "tacky".  I'm surprised that Karen let him out of the house dressed like that.  Loyd Cowan was crowned as the "TACKY KING" of the night and Donna Mize as the "TACKY QUEEN".

WATCH for more exciting dances in October on the 22nd for Solos Annual Halloween Dance. ALSO: SOLO SQUARES 13TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER and DANCE on November 12, 2009.

Our sympathy goes out to Betty Hodgson, who is going through Levi and Laces lessons and has been an inactive Solo member because of health reasons, in the passing of her sister on August 13, 2009.

As long as our memories serve us, and regardless of where the affairs of life may lead us, or the economic situation of our country, we shall always consider and look back to the rewards and "Fun" times we've had with our square and round dancing friends.

Hope to share that "Fun" with you in a square soon.

Be happy and keep dancing,

Danny Kingsley, Solo Reporter

We do not host traditional lessons, instead we have a rhythm workshop. We begin and work on a different rhythm each quarter. Since each rhythm can be learned independently of any other rhythm and we learn from the beginning for each rhythm new people can come out and start learning at the beginning of any quarter during the year.

3rd quarter 09 (July, August, September) - Jive rhythm
4th quarter 09 (October, November, December) - Waltz
1st quarter 10 (January, February, March) - uundecided at this time

The program of dances from 8:00-10:00 pm. is comprised of the following:
        Phase II & III two-step
Phase II, III, & IV waltz
Phase III & IV rumba, cha, jive & foxtrot

Additionally, during in the evening program there are 3 to 5 prerecorded dances that besides the above rhythms also include the slow two-step & bolero rhythms.

Mark your calendars for October 31st. Tuesday Rounds will be hosting the Harvest Ball. The "public" is invited to this dance, a fun night of social & country dancing, so come out and bring all of your friends even if they don't square or round dance! ! !  Hopefully, with this dance and more like it, we will arouse some community interest in our dancing activities. Flyers will be at the dance center soon.

Texas State Federation of Square and Round Dancers

Dance by the Bay — Escape the Everyday!

Galveston - 2010

News from the State Federation

Hello!  We would like to introduce the Texas State Federation of Square and Round Dancers 2009-2010 elected officers to you.  Howard and Sandra Rowan from the East Texas SRDA are Vice President.  They live in Henderson.  Jon and Veronica Steffens from the Austin SRDA are Treasurer.  They live in Austin.  Wayne and Micky Daniels from the Alamo Area SRDA are Secretary.  They live in San Antonio.  We (Preston and Carolyn Smith) are President.  We are from the Houston SRDC and live in Katy.  Together the elected officers have been dancing more years than any of us want to admit!  We have served our home clubs and districts as officers.  We want to help Texas dancers promote the growth of square and round dancing.

What is the Texas State Federation?  It is an umbrella organization for the 17 member organizations in Texas.  Our purpose is to promote square and round dancing and assist the member organizations in their promotional efforts.  The Federation provides liability and secondary accident insurance to its members for a small fee.  It provides website hosting and publicity matching funds.  The Federation has four meetings a year:  Presidents Meeting (October), Nominating Meeting (January), Conclave Meeting (March) and Festival Meeting (June).  The Federation also holds an annual festival in conjunction with the Texas Callers Association and the Host District of the Federation.  This year will be the 48th Annual Texas State Square and Round Dance Festival and will be held on Galveston Island.  The Texas Callers Association will host the Trail End Dance on June 10, Houston SRDC will host the Pre-Festival Dance on June 11, and Festival will be on June 12-13.  The theme is Dance by the Bay — Escape the Everyday!

We would like to invite you to attend Presidents Meeting and dance on October 9-10.  Top of Texas SRD will be the host.  The event will be at the Amarillo Civic Center, 401 S. Buchanan Street.  You can find more information on this event and other Federation events on the website:  www.squaredancetx.com and in the Federation newsletter, The Texas Star.

We look forward to meeting you on the dance floor and hearing from you.  Our email address is carolynann@consolidated.net and pmsmith@consolidated.net.
