Dear Square and Round Dance Friends,

Well, our new year is off to a great start and we hope yours is too!

The past few months have been a busy and interesting time for the LASRDF. We are so blessed to have so many hard working people in this organization. The next time you see Nettie Pritchard, Gene Turnipseed, Ellen and Charles Spoon, Renee Horton and Garey Smith, please take time to thank them for the tremendous job they have done and are still doing for the LASRDF in putting together a great program for promoting square and round dancing and raising funds for the Children's Miracle network. We know we have neglected mentioning others, but we are grateful for all of you who have graciously helped in making this a successful project.

Beginning with the CMN fundraising dance on November 21, 2009, which raised $1335 toward our goal of $1500, we have received unbelievable publicity and TV coverage from KCBD, Channel 11. We owe a world of gratitude to Karin McCay, Abner Euresti, and CMN's Kathy Reasoner for their news coverage and support they have shown for square and round dancing. Also, a big "Thank You!" goes to Dr. Brad Bale who appeared with Gene Turnipseed on Karin McCay's Healthwise on January 5 to promote the health benefits of square and round dancing. If you missed these events, you can probably still find them on KCBD.com. A video taken at our December Federation Dance by Channel 11 can be viewed on Youtube.com.

Still coming up February 5 is a brief segment on Channel 11's Noon Notebook. Charles Spoon will be on the show to tell about the square and round dance lessons starting February 13.

It was decided at our last Delegates' Meeting to postpone our March Federation dance, originally scheduled for March 6, until March 13. This was done because so many people were going to be gone to the TSFSRD Conclave meeting and dances on March 5 and 6. Hopefully, by changing the date, we will have a better attendance at both events.

There are other events that we should mention, but we seem to be running out of space. Please check our bulletin board and credenza at the building. These events can also be found on our 'Bulletin Board' at squaredancelubbocktx.com.

Keep on dancing!

Garland and Ada

Out with the old year and in with the New Year? No way, memories are tied back there with more to come. Diamond Plus Dancers shared the holiday spirit with a potluck dinner and gift swap. Square dancers are great cooks. Can that be in the fine print somewhere? Mischief abounded in the gift swap. Just what you always wanted and then--your friend took it away from you. The laughter is one of those memories.

We begin the New Year with more celebrations. First, a birthday for Cindy Riddle, January 10 and an anniversary for George and Elaine Simko, January 29. Jess Ritcherson has a birthday February 5. You can still wish for a year of good things when you see him at Federation Dance on Saturday night, dancing with Bob Baier and Kathy Stevens. Great way to celebrate a birthday! Charles and Ellen Spoon are celebrating a wedding anniversary February 8.

Charles Spoon is celebrating his birthday March 6. Quick on the heels of that are birthdays for Rubie Horton, 3/15; Johnnie Barton 3/24; and Barbara Gentry, 3/31.

There are tears to be had too. Joann Stewart's mother died January 25. Your many friends extend their sympathy.

If you have family and friends who have yet to discover the many positive things about square dancing, bring them to Solo's Monday night beginner lessons. Try it--you''ll like it--is so true. Hoping to see you dancing often.

                                              Delegates-Thelma Fowler and Jim Dickens

Hub City appreciates all of you who came to our Anniversary Dance on January 16.  We hope you had as good a time as we did and got your fill of spaghetti. Our thanks go to Mike Bramlett and Kathy Stevens who did a superb job.

The winning ticket for our grand prize, a night’s stay at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso, NM plus a $50 gift card, was sold by Mike Hurst.  A non square dancer, Lance Flud who works at Anthony Mechanical was the surprised winner.  He was probably a little bit confused (to say the least) by the message left by Mike Bramlett during the dance attempting to inform him of his win.  However, Mike Hurst finally talked to the winner on Monday and verified Mike Bramlett’s message.  Lance was understandably delighted.

Hub City president, Jim Dickens, has had his share of problems with his heart this past year, but at least they did find that he had one.  It gets out of rhythm every now and then and has to be shocked back into rhythm. That is no easy procedure and could be dangerous as well as painful.  Let’s keep him in our prayers.

Hub City still dances every second and fourth Friday nights.  We would love for you to come visit us.

Hope to see you in a square soon.

Now that the Holidays have passed, the Fudge is gone and the Candy canes are just memories, we flipped the page of a calendar and said that one year ended and another began. Yet, with our own reasoning, we know that no year is complete within itself. There is an overlap--continuity. Therefore, the SOLO SQUARES greet you as the old year passed and we begin a new one together. We do so with thanksgiving and appreciation to our fellow square dancers that have blessed us with their presence and support at our dances and the opportunities we've had to dance together this past year.

We thank all of the 32 of you that came out to the South Plains Mall in December for the exhibition hosted by the Solos. The Solos held their Annual Christmas Dance on December 10, 2009 and honored our caller, Dennis Horn and his taw, Karen. Everyone enjoyed the White Elephant Gift Exchange but no one wanted to trade Loyd Cowan out of the old pair of cover alls that he unwrapped. The dancing dog and moose seemed to be the hit of the night. They were passed around quite a bit before they found a home. A special thanks goes to caller, Garey Smith and Linda, for attending the dance and gift exchange. Callers seem to have a hard time keeping gifts, especially those Christmas hats that wiggle and ring a bell.

With a new year already in the making, Solos, along with the other clubs of the Federation, brought in the new year of 2010 by attending the Federation New Year's Eve Dance hosted by the Tuesday Rounds. A special thanks to Dick Parrish and Rene Horton for calling and cueing as the old year of 2009 disappeared. A New Year and a New Decade began. Now is the time to revive our dance activities. Let's concentrate on getting new dancers into our clubs and Federation.

Solos began a new set of lessons on January 11, 2010 with18 new dancers. I can*t think of a better way for a club to begin a New Year than to make new friends and introduce them into the wonderful world of square dancing. A special thanks to all of the other clubs that came out opening night to help "angel" our new dancers. Also in January, the Solos hosted a country western dance as a fundraiser for the club on January 23, 2010. A lot of two stepping and line dancing was planned for all that attended. At the time of this writing we do not have the results of that adventure.

One of our newest members, Jerry West, is nursing a knee back to health following surgery. He is doing well now that his wife Sheila is taking good care of him. The Solos and other dancers of the Lubbock Federation extend our sympathy to Donna Mize Beavers and the Beavers family in the sudden passing of Larry Beavers Sunday night, January 17 at his home with massive heart failure. His funeral was Saturday, January 23 at Colorado City. Larry was a member of the Solos and a Ranch Host for the National Ranching Heritage Center. He and Donna were on the Ranch Host Dance team.

Mark your calendars for APRIL 17, 2010 for SOLOS 38TH ANNIVERSARY DANCE. The callers will be JON & DEBORAH CARROLL JONES of Arlington. Cuer will be LYNN & DIONICIA MYERS of Midland. The theme will be "DANCING TO NEW HORIZONS". A Special $200 DOOR PRIZE will be given away. Solos will be selling tickets for the drawing soon. Make plans now to attend!

Thought for the Day - "Only one man in 1000 is a leader of men. The other 999 follow women".  Keep Smiling and Dancing

Highlights from TSFSRD Nominating Meeting (January in Winnie)

We missed those of you who were unable to be at the meeting. There was lots of good discussion and participation during the meeting. Thank You! We would like to share the highlights of the business meeting with you.

The Share & Learn was presented during the general business meeting by Betsy Nyhan, Heart of        Texas SRDA. Betsy shared how her club uses the internet and email to keep dancers informed and involved with club activities. Her presentation was emailed to delegates.

No requests for the Publicity Matching Funds have been received - we're waiting!!!!.

2016 National Square Dance Convention Bid City: Lubbock SRDF withdrew their intent to bid. Prior to the presentations by the bidding districts, the Texas members of the National Executive Committee (Butch and Ampie Hayes, Lettie Reed, Merle Gearman) gave an update on their October meeting. There was lively discussion on whether or not to continue with the bid process to host 2016 National Square Dance Convention. A vote by all dancers present was in favor of continuing the bid process. Austin SRDA, Houston SRDC and Top of Texas SRDA made presentations to meeting attendees and questions were answered. The delegates voted to use Amarillo (Top of Texas SRDA) as the host city when Texas places its bid.

Federation Gold Card rebates were distributed.

Alamo Area SRDA was awarded the bid to host the 2011 Nominating Meeting. Austin SRDA was awarded the bid to host the 2011 Presidents Meeting. Red River Valley SRDA made a verbal intent to bid to host 2012 Festival.

2010 Festival Update: District Presidents received the discount coupons to give to new dancers. The coupon must accompany the registration form. The discount is good only on pre-registrations. More are available by contacting Preston and Carolyn Smith. 25 registrations for Festival were received during the weekend. Wayne Daniels won the fan bird carving. It's not too late to get your beach outfit for festival. Contact Carolyn Smith for details.

We look forward to dancing with you at Conclave Meeting in Odessa March 5-6.

Yellow Rocks!
