Our thanks go to Solo Squares for their Thanksgiving dinner and dance on November 12th. They served a fantastic meal as well as provided a great time for over six squares of dancers. We would like to encourage all of our new dancers as well as our older members to come out and support our special Federation Dances, which are held each month from September through May. You can dance to some of the best callers and cuers in the nation. Darryl Lipscomb from Mission, Texas (and all over the nation during the spring and summer months) will be calling our December 5 dance. Kathy/Jerry Stevens from Abilene will be cueing. Our New Year’s Eve dance on December 31 will feature Dick Parrish and our own, Renee’ Horton. It will start one hour later at 8:15 pm. and will last until we dance in the New Year at 12:00 am. The TSFSRD Officers will be visiting us during our February 6, 2010 dance. Come on out, help make them welcome and dance to Bob Baier and Kathy Stevens. On a sadder note, square dancing lost one of its “Best” October 30. Gene Osteen, past president of TSFSRD and tireless worker for the square dance world, was killed in a tragic accident while trimming a large tree on his property. Our thoughts and prayers have been with his wife, Clydette, and their family--as I’m sure yours have been. A thank you note from Clydette and family follows this letter. Again, we wish all a Happy Holiday Season and hope too see you in a square soon. Garland and Ada Cooper

Secretary: June Lange TIS THE SEASON TO COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS Autumn slipped in on us while we were enjoying the summer and here it is. November begins and autumn is at its fullest as we give thanks for past seasons and of Thanksgivings of yesteryear, abounding in things that delight the sense and the spirit. This is one of the seasons that reminds us of all the good things and wonderful people in our lives. I like to look for the little things to be thankful for-such as when someone on the street smiles and speaks to me, or the store clerk tells me to have a good day—and really means it. Watching the leaves on my trees don their new fall outfits before discarding them to decorate my yard with the reds, oranges and yellows is a great way to greet the day. We give thanks to each of you this Thanksgiving season for your loving support of the Solo Squares this year and for many of you that have supported our organization for the last 37 years. I am thankful for Dorothy Webb who has been a faithful charter member for all those 37 years. May each of you have the best of this season of “Thanksgiving” and remember to “Count Your Blessings, name them one by one…” I was in Galveston at the 61st Annual “Houston Hoedown” and missed the Solo’s Annual Fall and Halloween Dance on October 22, 2009. I heard that a lot of people had fun and there was a great turnout. Our congratulations to Don Garrett, the “Simi Wrestler” and one of our new dancers, Gwynn Carman, the “Flapper, for winning the costume contest. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that square dancers don’t have fun. We sure do….!!!! *Special note: After attending the great “Houston Hoedown” on Oct. 23-24, 2009, I am convinced that square dancing is NOT about to die. There were 50 squares in the Grand March on Saturday night with a possible 10 to 12 squares setting out watching. It was a fantastic dance with a lot of great callers and cuers. You should plan to go next year. It will be the same place at Galveston…the Moody Gardens. By the time you receive this article in the Federation newsletter, the Solo Squares 14th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Dance on November 12th will be history. If you didn’t make it, I know those Solos cook a lot of good food. Remember the Solos will not dance on Thursday, November 26th, 2009. Enjoy those blessings with your families. Solo’s next dance will be on December 10, 2009, our annual CHRISTMAS DANCE. It will be from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at the Dance Center. Come out and get some exercise and work off that Turkey dinner you ate at Thanksgiving. Our Santa caller will be Dennis Horn. We will have our annual “White Elephant Gift Exchange”, which is optional. Come and enjoy the FUN. We will not dance on December 24th. REMEMBER….SOLO SQUARES LESSONS BEGIN ON JANUARY 11, 2010. It is open to all ages from 14 up….Class begins at 7:30 pm at the Dance Center. KEEP SMILING, DANCING and COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS…..…

Texas State Federation of Square and Round Dancers Dance by the Bay — Escape the Everyday! Galveston - 2010 News from the State Federation
We'd like to share with you the highlights of the Federation's October Presidents meeting in Amarillo. Thank you Top of Texas SRDA dancers for a great weekend! At the Saturday evening dance we were pleased to be able to introduce and thank the district, member organization and affiliate organization presidents. Eleven organizations were represented. These dancers work very hard to promote square and round dancing and ensure we have a place to dance and a group to dance with! At the Saturday business meeting, the delegates voted on changes to the State Constitution, By-Laws and Standing Rules and adopted the 2010 Festival Budget. At the beginning of the meeting there was short explanation of what to expect at State business meetings. In the afternoon, there was a Share and Learn Session about member retention. Ask your delegates for details.
